Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. This session focuses on developing clear voice commands that the horse responds to consistently.
  2. Start at the walk on the lunge. Use a clear, calm 'walk' to maintain the gait.
  3. To trot, use a short, upbeat 'ter-ROT' with rising pitch. The horse should respond to the voice before any whip aid.
  4. To walk from trot, use a drawn-out, calming 'waaaalk.' Lower your energy to match.
  5. To halt, use 'whoa' in a low, firm tone. Drop your body energy and the whip to support the voice.
  6. Practice transitions using only voice for 10 minutes. Only add physical aids if the voice is ignored.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the same tone for all commands, making them indistinguishable to the horse.
  • Mumbling or speaking too quietly for the horse to hear clearly.
  • Always using physical aids simultaneously, so the horse never learns to respond to voice alone.
  • Not being consistent with the exact command words.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add 'canter' to the voice command library.
  • Test voice commands without a lunge line (in a round pen) for true voice responsiveness.
  • Use the same voice commands under saddle for cross-training consistency.
Tip: Horses learn voice commands faster than most people think. Be consistent with your words and tone, and within 2-3 sessions, the horse will respond to voice alone.
