Most riders only mount from the left. This exercise trains mounting from both sides.
Using a mounting block, mount from the left side as normal. Ride a circle, then dismount.
Now reposition the mounting block on the right side of the horse.
Mount from the right side. This will feel strange at first — your stirrup foot and hand positions are reversed.
Ride a circle, then dismount from the right side.
Practice until mounting from either side feels natural. On the trail, you may need to mount from the right.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not using a mounting block (for the horse's back health).
The horse moving away when you attempt to mount from the unfamiliar right side.
Not adjusting stirrups from the right side (they may feel different).
Rushing the process — take time to figure out the reversed mechanics.
Variations & Progressions
Practice emergency dismounts from both sides.
Mount from uneven ground (uphill side vs. downhill side).
Practice mounting without a mounting block for trail emergencies.
Tip: Being able to mount from either side is a practical safety skill. On the trail, you may be next to a cliff on the left — you need to mount from the right.
