Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. At the collected collected trot, ask your horse to flex to the inside by softly vibrating the inside rein.
  2. When the horse gives to the pressure and flexes, immediately soften (give) the rein as a reward.
  3. Ask for the flexion again. Each time the horse softens, reward by giving the rein.
  4. Repeat on the other side. You're teaching the horse to yield to rein pressure, not pull against it.
  5. After 5-6 successful yields on each side, test by asking while collected trotting.
  6. The goal is a horse that softens its jaw and poll when you ask, without resistance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Pulling the rein backward instead of vibrating or squeezing.
  • Not releasing (giving) the rein when the horse yields, so the horse never learns the reward.
  • Asking for too much flexion — you only need the horse to soften at the poll.
  • Getting into a tug-of-war where both horse and rider are pulling.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add neck yielding during trot work as a regular softening exercise.
  • Combine neck yielding with leg yielding for a multitask suppleness exercise.
  • Use one-rein flexion followed by both-rein half-halt for connection work.
Tip: Think of the rein aid as asking a question, not giving a command. Ask, wait for the answer, then say thank you by softening.
