Night Riding Preparation
Focus: Confidence, Trust, Sensory
Equipment: Reflective vest
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Ride in your arena as dusk approaches. Notice how shadows change the landscape.
- Walk the perimeter as light fades. The horse will become more alert as visibility decreases.
- Practice halts in darker corners of the arena. The horse should stand quietly regardless of light level.
- Talk calmly to your horse throughout. Your voice is reassuring when visual cues diminish.
- Ride for 15-20 minutes as light fades. The horse should gradually relax.
- This prepares you and your horse for trail rides that return home in low light.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Riding in complete darkness (always have some ambient light).
- Not wearing reflective gear in low-light conditions.
- Riding in unfamiliar terrain in the dark (stick to the arena for this exercise).
- Pushing the horse past its comfort level in low light.
Variations & Progressions
- Add a small flashlight and practice turning it on while riding.
- Ride with a headlamp to simulate trail riding in low light.
- Gradually extend the duration of low-light riding sessions.
Tip: Horses see better in low light than humans, but they see differently. Shadows look like holes, and familiar objects look alien. Patience helps.
