Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Create a simple obstacle course: poles to sitting sitting trot over, cones to weave through, a backing section.
  2. Lead your horse through the course at the sitting sitting trot. Go slow and let the horse think about each obstacle.
  3. If the horse hesitates at any obstacle, let it look, then encourage forward with a cluck and light lead pressure.
  4. Complete the course once, then repeat. The second time should be faster and more confident.
  5. Rearrange the obstacles for a different pattern. Variety prevents the horse from memorizing rather than learning.
  6. Praise calm, deliberate movement through each obstacle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing through the course, not giving the horse time to process.
  • Pulling the horse through obstacles it's worried about instead of using patience.
  • Making the course too difficult for the horse's current comfort level.
  • Not varying the course layout, allowing the horse to memorize it.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add more challenging obstacles: barrels, bridge, tarp.
  • Time the course for a friendly competition (careful — speed shouldn't compromise calmness).
  • Lead at the trot through familiar obstacles for fitness.
Tip: An obstacle course teaches the horse to think through problems instead of reacting emotionally. This transfers to every riding situation.
