Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up a placing pole, then a cross-rail 9 feet later, then a second cross-rail 18 feet after the first (one stride).
  2. Approach at the trot. The placing pole helps the horse arrive at the correct takeoff distance.
  3. The horse jumps the first cross-rail, lands, takes one canter stride, and jumps the second.
  4. Your job is to maintain balance and rhythm. Don't interfere with the horse's natural arc.
  5. Keep your eyes up and your leg on. Allow the horse to figure out the striding.
  6. Start low (12 inches) and gradually raise to 18 inches as the horse gains confidence.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Looking down at the fences instead of up and ahead.
  • Pulling on the reins between the two fences, shortening the horse's stride.
  • Throwing the upper body forward over each jump, getting ahead of the motion.
  • Approaching in canter instead of trot, which changes the distance.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add a third fence at 18 feet for a two-stride gymnastic.
  • Change the distances: 17 feet for a shorter stride, 19 feet for a longer stride.
  • Raise to verticals at 2-2.5 feet for more challenge.
Tip: Gymnastics teach your horse to jump correctly without you having to micromanage the takeoff. Trust the exercise.
