Pool Noodle Desensitization at the Trot
Focus: Confidence, Desensitization, Trust
Equipment: 2 pool noodles, Halter and leadrope
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Hold a pool noodle in one hand while leading your horse. Let the horse see and smell it.
- Gently touch the horse's shoulder with the noodle. If it stands still, praise and remove the noodle.
- Gradually work the noodle along the neck, back, and hindquarters. Go slowly and reward calm behavior.
- Progress to rubbing the noodle over the horse's legs (this is usually scarier).
- Wave the noodle gently in the air near the horse. The movement is more challenging than the touch.
- The goal: the horse stands quietly while you wave pool noodles all around its body.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting with the noodle on a sensitive area (legs, belly) instead of the shoulder.
- Moving the noodle too quickly, startling the horse.
- Not retreating when the horse shows signs of stress (high head, tight muscles, wide eyes).
- Only desensitizing on one side — horses need both-side exposure.
Variations & Progressions
- Hang pool noodles from a line for the horse to walk through like a curtain.
- Use the noodle while the horse is tied for standing-still practice.
- Progress to plastic bags on a stick for a noisier challenge.
Tip: Pool noodles are the best desensitization tool because they're soft, colorful, and make interesting sounds without causing harm.
