Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Before mounting, spend 5 minutes stretching your key riding muscles.
  2. Hamstring stretch: reach for your toes with straight legs. Hold for 20 seconds.
  3. Hip flexor stretch: lunge position, push your hips forward. Hold for 20 seconds each side.
  4. Inner thigh stretch: wide stance, lean to each side. Hold for 20 seconds.
  5. Shoulder rolls: 10 forward, 10 backward. Loosen the upper body.
  6. Ankle circles: 10 each direction. Your ankles absorb shock in the stirrups.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Bouncing in stretches instead of holding steady (bouncing causes micro-tears).
  • Skipping stretching because you're in a hurry.
  • Only stretching one side of the body.
  • Stretching cold muscles too aggressively — light movement before deep stretching.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add post-ride stretching for recovery.
  • Include balance exercises: stand on one foot for 30 seconds each side.
  • Stretch while your horse is warming up at the walk (mounted hip and back stretches).
Tip: A stiff rider creates a stiff horse. Your flexibility directly impacts your horse's comfort and performance.
