Pre-Ride Stretching for the Rider at the Collected Trot
Focus: Fitness, Flexibility, Injury Prevention
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Before mounting, spend 5 minutes stretching your key riding muscles.
- Hamstring stretch: reach for your toes with straight legs. Hold for 20 seconds.
- Hip flexor stretch: lunge position, push your hips forward. Hold for 20 seconds each side.
- Inner thigh stretch: wide stance, lean to each side. Hold for 20 seconds.
- Shoulder rolls: 10 forward, 10 backward. Loosen the upper body.
- Ankle circles: 10 each direction. Your ankles absorb shock in the stirrups.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Bouncing in stretches instead of holding steady (bouncing causes micro-tears).
- Skipping stretching because you're in a hurry.
- Only stretching one side of the body.
- Stretching cold muscles too aggressively — light movement before deep stretching.
Variations & Progressions
- Add post-ride stretching for recovery.
- Include balance exercises: stand on one foot for 30 seconds each side.
- Stretch while your horse is warming up at the walk (mounted hip and back stretches).
Tip: A stiff rider creates a stiff horse. Your flexibility directly impacts your horse's comfort and performance.
