Progressive Transitions
Focus: Transitions, Rhythm, Obedience
Equipment: Letter markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start at the halt on the center line. Prepare mentally for a series of upward transitions.
- Ask for walk. Walk for 8-10 strides with energy and rhythm.
- Ask for trot. Trot for 8-10 strides with a steady tempo.
- Ask for canter. Canter for 8-10 strides on the correct lead.
- Now reverse: canter to trot (8-10 strides), trot to walk (8-10 strides), walk to halt.
- The entire sequence should feel like a smooth escalator — each gait builds on the last.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing the upward transitions so they feel abrupt and unbalanced.
- The horse breaking to trot during the canter phase because of insecure aids.
- Downward transitions that take too long (dribbling through 15 strides instead of 8-10).
- Losing rhythm or straightness during any of the transitions.
Variations & Progressions
- Reduce to 5 strides per gait for a more advanced version.
- Add halt-trot and halt-canter transitions to skip gaits.
- Perform the progressive transitions on a 20-meter circle instead of a straight line.
Tip: This exercise is like playing musical scales. The goal is evenness and flow between each gait.
