Quarter-Line Riding
Focus: Straightness, Balance, Independence
Equipment: 2 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- The quarter line is 5 meters from the rail. Place cones at each end to mark the line.
- Turn off the track and ride down the quarter line at the trot.
- Without the rail to guide you, your horse's natural drift becomes apparent.
- Use equal leg pressure to keep the horse straight. If it drifts toward the rail, apply inside leg. If it drifts inward, apply outside leg.
- Ride the quarter line in both directions on both reins.
- This exercise develops rider independence — you can't rely on the wall for straightness.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse consistently drifting toward the rail for security.
- Over-correcting and zigzagging instead of riding a straight line.
- Not riding deep enough into the corner before turning onto the quarter line.
- Losing the rhythm because you're focused on straightness.
Variations & Progressions
- Ride the quarter line at the canter for increased difficulty.
- Add transitions on the quarter line: trot-walk-trot without drifting.
- Ride shoulder-fore on the quarter line to practice lateral positioning away from the rail.
Tip: If your horse drifts toward the rail, it's telling you which shoulder is dominant. Use this information to plan your training.
