Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up a 'gate' using a ground pole balanced between two cones at hip height (or use an actual gate if available).
  2. Approach the gate at the walk. Stop your horse parallel to the gate.
  3. Reach down and 'open' the gate (or simulate opening by touching the pole end).
  4. Side-pass your horse through the gate opening, maintaining contact with the gate.
  5. Turn and close the gate, still maintaining contact. Back your horse away from the gate.
  6. The entire exercise should be calm, deliberate, and controlled.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The horse not standing still while you reach for the gate.
  • Losing contact with the gate during the side-pass through.
  • The horse walking forward through the gate instead of side-passing.
  • Rushing the exercise — gates require patience and precision.

Variations & Progressions

  • Practice with a real gate for authenticity.
  • Open and close the gate from both sides (right and left hand).
  • Time the gate exercise and work on smooth efficiency.
Tip: Gate work is a fundamental ranch skill. Practice at home where there's no pressure, so it's easy at a show.
