Ride and Lead: Ponying Another Horse

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Mount your horse while holding the lead rope of a second horse at the halt.
- Hold the lead rope in your free hand (if neck reining) or in the same hand as one rein.
- Walk both horses forward. The led horse should walk beside and slightly behind your horse.
- Practice in an arena first. Walk patterns, halt, and change direction with both horses.
- Keep the lead rope short enough to maintain control but long enough that both horses have room.
- This is a practical trail skill for ponying young horses, injured horses, or leading pack horses.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wrapping the lead rope around your hand (dangerous if the horse pulls away).
- The led horse pulling ahead or lagging too far behind.
- Both horses getting tangled because the lead rope is too long.
- Not having an escape plan if the led horse panics.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice ponying at the trot for conditioning two horses simultaneously.
- Pony on the trail for a real-world application.
- Practice ponying from both sides of your horse.
Tip: Ponying is an essential ranch and trail skill. Never wrap the lead rope around your hand — if the horse bolts, the rope must slip free.
