Arena diagram for Riding in a Group: Maintaining Distance at the Sitting Trot

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. When trail riding in a group, maintain one horse-length distance from the horse ahead.
  2. If the horse ahead speeds up, don't let your horse match the pace. Half-halt and maintain your speed.
  3. If the horse ahead stops suddenly, you need enough distance to stop safely.
  4. Practice in an arena first: ride behind another horse, maintaining consistent 10-foot spacing.
  5. If your horse gets herd-bound (anxious when the other horse moves away), circle and redirect attention.
  6. The goal is a horse that maintains its own pace regardless of what other horses do.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Allowing your horse to tailgate the horse ahead (dangerous if that horse kicks).
  • Your horse matching every speed change of the group instead of maintaining your chosen pace.
  • Riding so far behind that you're separated from the group, causing anxiety.
  • Not correcting your horse when it tries to speed up to catch the group.

Variations & Progressions

  • Practice being both first and last in the group for versatility.
  • Practice having the horse ahead disappear around a corner while you wait calmly.
  • Ride at different paces within the group (walk while others trot, trot while others walk).
Tip: A safe trail horse is a horse that listens to its rider, not the group. Train your horse to follow your cues, not the herd.
