Riding in Open Spaces
Focus: Confidence, Control, Exposure
Equipment: Access to an open field
Step-by-Step Instructions
- If you normally ride in an arena, take your horse to an open field or large paddock.
- Start at the walk. Let the horse look around and adjust to the larger space.
- Ride simple patterns: large circles, straight lines along fence lines.
- Progress to the trot after the horse is relaxed at the walk.
- If the horse becomes nervous, return to the walk and ride near the fence line for security.
- Gradually explore more of the open space. The goal is confident movement anywhere in the field.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Letting the horse gallop off because there's no arena fence to stop it.
- Only riding along the fence line and never venturing into the middle of the field.
- Pulling on the reins when nervous, which makes the horse more nervous.
- Starting in too large an open space — a large paddock is better than an open field for beginners.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice in progressively larger open spaces.
- Ride in open spaces with a calm buddy horse for confidence.
- Add canter work in the open field once the horse is relaxed at walk and trot.
Tip: Open spaces test your horse's training and your leadership. If you're confident, the horse will follow your lead.
