Riding Past Scary Objects
Focus: Confidence, Desensitization, Trust
Equipment: Various objects: umbrella, bucket, blanket
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Place a mildly scary object (folded umbrella, bucket, blanket on a fence) in the arena.
- Ride your horse past the object at a distance of 30 feet. If it's calm, praise.
- On the next pass, ride at 25 feet. Then 20, 15, 10, and finally 5 feet.
- If the horse spooks at any distance, maintain your aids and ride past calmly. Circle and approach again.
- Don't force the horse to touch the object. Just ride past at gradually closer distances.
- Once comfortable at 5 feet, try halting beside the object for 10 seconds.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forcing the horse directly to the scary object on the first approach.
- Tensing up yourself, which transfers anxiety to the horse.
- Punishing spooking — the horse's flight instinct is natural.
- Avoiding scary objects entirely instead of using them as training opportunities.
Variations & Progressions
- Place new objects in the arena every ride for constant exposure.
- Have someone move the object while you ride past for an advanced challenge.
- Ride past scary objects in a group for confidence through herd behavior.
Tip: Your body language matters more than anything. If you're relaxed, the horse reads 'it's safe.' If you're tense, the horse reads 'danger.'
