Riding Through Tight Spaces
Focus: Confidence, Body Awareness, Control
Equipment: 2 barrels or standards, 4 ground poles
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Create a narrow passage using barrels or standards, approximately 4 feet wide.
- Walk your horse toward the narrow passage. Allow it to assess the space.
- Keep your legs on firmly. The horse may try to stop or veer around the narrow gap.
- Guide the horse straight through the passage using equal rein and leg aids.
- Once through, walk forward 10 strides and halt. Praise the horse.
- Repeat 4-6 times. Gradually narrow the passage to 3.5 feet if the horse is comfortable.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not keeping enough forward impulsion, allowing the horse to stop and refuse.
- The horse scraping the rider's legs on the standards because the passage is too narrow.
- Approaching at an angle instead of straight on.
- Giving up and going around the passage when the horse hesitates.
Variations & Progressions
- Walk through with your arms out to the side to simulate carrying saddlebags.
- Trot through the passage for increased confidence challenge.
- Create a longer corridor (10 feet long) for a sustained narrow-space experience.
Tip: Tight spaces on the trail are inevitable — between trees, rocks, or fences. A horse that's practiced in tight spaces stays calm when it matters.
