Rollback Turn to a Single Fence at the Collected Trot

Equipment: 2 jump poles, 2 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a single vertical in the center of the arena.
- Jump the fence, then immediately ride a tight rollback turn (half-circle) and jump it again from the other direction.
- The rollback should be a smooth half-circle, not a sharp pivot. Maintain the collected trot throughout.
- Start with a wide rollback (20-meter half-circle) and gradually tighten to 10-15 meters.
- The horse needs to land, rebalance on the turn, and set up for the next approach in just a few strides.
- Practice rollbacks to both directions for even development.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The turn being too tight, causing the horse to break to trot or lose balance.
- Not looking early enough in the direction of the rollback turn.
- Landing and running straight for too many strides before starting the turn.
- The second approach being rushed and unbalanced.
Variations & Progressions
- Set up two fences and alternate rollback turns between them.
- Tighten the rollback to simulate jump-off turns.
- Add a related distance after the rollback: rollback to two-stride line.
Tip: Rollbacks win jump-offs. The tighter your rollback, the fewer strides you waste. But tightness should never sacrifice balance.
