Shoulder-Fore Warm-Up
Focus: Straightness, Suppleness, Warm-up
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin at the walk on the track. Ask for a very slight inside flexion — just enough to see the inside eye.
- Bring the inside shoulder just barely off the track, about 2 inches inward. This is shoulder-fore.
- Walk the entire arena in shoulder-fore, maintaining the slight positioning throughout.
- The purpose is to align the horse's inside hind leg to step toward the line between the two front legs.
- Progress to the trot in shoulder-fore. Maintain the subtle positioning.
- Practice shoulder-fore on both reins. Most horses are easier on one side.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Creating too much angle — shoulder-fore is very subtle, not a full shoulder-in.
- Only bending the neck without moving the shoulder.
- Losing the positioning in the corners where the horse naturally bends.
- The rider twisting their body to try to create the angle.
Variations & Progressions
- Use shoulder-fore as your default position for every ride, not just as an exercise.
- Apply shoulder-fore on 20-meter circles to prevent the horse from falling in.
- Transition from shoulder-fore to shoulder-in by increasing the angle gradually.
Tip: Shoulder-fore is the single most useful position in riding. It corrects natural crookedness and improves every movement.
