Place a ground pole on the ground. Position your horse with its front feet on one side and hind feet on the other.
Standing at the horse's shoulder, ask it to step sideways over the pole by applying pressure to the shoulder and hip simultaneously.
The horse should cross both front and hind legs, stepping over the pole sideways.
Take one step at a time. Release and praise after each successful sideways step.
The pole provides a visual guide and prevents the horse from cantering forward or backward.
Practice in both directions. Most horses will have an easier side.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The horse walking forward or backward instead of sideways over the pole.
Only the forehand or hindquarters moving, not the whole body together.
Asking for too many steps at once before the horse understands the exercise.
The pole being positioned where the horse can't comfortably step over it.
Variations & Progressions
Side-pass without the pole once the horse understands the concept.
Side-pass along a fence or wall for added guidance.
Progress to side-pass under saddle after the ground version is solid.
Tip: The ground pole is your best friend for teaching side-pass. It prevents cheating (forward/backward movement) and makes the correct answer obvious.
