Simple Change Through Canter

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin at the working canter, tracking right on a 20-meter circle.
- At X (or a designated point), transition from canter to canter. Allow 3-5 clear canter steps.
- After the canter steps, pick up the left lead canter — the new inside lead.
- Ride the 20-meter circle on the new lead for one full revolution.
- At X again, canter for 3-5 steps and pick up the right lead.
- Repeat the simple change 4-6 times. Gradually reduce the number of canter steps to 3.
- The canter steps should be clear, forward, and balanced — not shuffling or rushing.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse trotting instead of walking between canter leads.
- Too many walk strides, losing the connection between the two canters.
- Picking up the wrong lead on the second canter depart.
- The horse becoming tense and anticipating the lead change.
Variations & Progressions
- Perform simple changes on a figure-eight, changing lead at X.
- Reduce to 2-3 walk strides for a more advanced simple change.
- Use simple changes as preparation for flying changes by progressive reduction of walk strides.
Tip: Count the walk steps out loud: 'one, two, three, canter.' This keeps you disciplined about the number of steps.
