Simple Course: Figure-Eight Pattern
Focus: Track Planning, Adjustability, Confidence
Equipment: 4 jump poles, 4 jump standards, 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up 2 small fences, one on each 20-meter circle of a figure-eight pattern.
- Start by cantering a circle over one fence, then change direction through the center to jump the second fence.
- After each fence, establish a balanced canter on the circle before approaching the next.
- The change of direction in the middle requires a simple change or a flying change.
- Ride the figure-eight 3-4 times, focusing on smooth changes of lead and consistent approaches.
- Each approach to a fence should feel the same: balanced canter, steady rhythm, looking ahead.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing to the next fence without establishing a balanced canter first.
- Forgetting to change leads, jumping the second fence on the wrong lead.
- The turns becoming too tight or too wide, affecting the approach.
- Losing confidence and checking (pulling) on the approach.
Variations & Progressions
- Add a third fence in the middle of the figure-eight for a three-jump course.
- Raise the fences to test confidence at height.
- Ride the figure-eight in a specific stride count for precision.
Tip: The figure-eight is the simplest course pattern, but it tests everything: lead changes, approaches, rhythm, and track planning.
