Sitting Trot Warm-Up Routine
Focus: Warm-up, Relaxation, Suppleness
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin every ride with a 10-minute sitting sitting trot warm-up. This is non-negotiable for horse health.
- Sitting Sitting Trot on a loose rein for the first 3 minutes. Allow the horse to stretch its neck and look around.
- Pick up a working rein length and sitting sitting trot the arena perimeter. Include all four corners for gentle bending.
- Add large circles (20 meters) at each end of the arena for further bending.
- Include 3-4 changes of direction across the diagonal to stretch both sides.
- By the end of the 10 minutes, the horse should be moving freely with a swinging back.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the walk warm-up and going straight to trot or canter.
- Making the warm-up too demanding (no lateral work or collection during warm-up).
- Walking on a tight rein that prevents the horse from stretching.
- Warming up for only 2-3 minutes — muscles need a full 10 minutes to be ready.
Variations & Progressions
- Add halt transitions in the warm-up for obedience.
- Include gentle leg yields for light lateral stretching.
- Vary your warm-up route to keep the horse interested.
Tip: The walk warm-up is an investment. 10 minutes of walking prevents months of veterinary bills from cold-started injuries.
