Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Stand near your horse and gently clap your hands once. If the horse doesn't react, praise.
  2. Gradually increase the volume of your clapping. Pause between each clap to let the horse process.
  3. Progress to other sounds: stomping your feet, jingling keys, shaking a can with pebbles.
  4. Introduce each new sound the same way: soft first, then gradually louder.
  5. The horse should learn to remain calm with various unexpected sounds.
  6. Practice in different locations — the arena, the barn aisle, near the trailer — for generalization.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Making loud sounds suddenly without building up gradually.
  • Not pausing between sounds to let the horse process and relax.
  • Ignoring early stress signs (high head, tense muscles, wide eyes) and continuing.
  • Only practicing in one location, so the horse generalizes poorly.

Variations & Progressions

  • Record various sounds on your phone and play them near the horse.
  • Practice near loudspeakers, music, or crowd noise for show preparation.
  • Combine sound desensitization with object desensitization for a multi-sensory challenge.
Tip: Horses at shows encounter every kind of noise: clapping, loudspeakers, generators, other animals. Home desensitization prevents show-day meltdowns.
