Square Pattern
Focus: Accuracy, Straightness, Transitions
Equipment: 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up four cones in a large square, about 15 meters per side, centered in the arena.
- Starting at any cone, ride a perfectly straight line to the next cone.
- At each cone, make a precise 90-degree turn. The turn should be a quarter of a small circle, not a choppy right angle.
- Ride the entire square at the walk first, focusing on the quality of each straight segment and turn.
- Progress to the trot. At the trot, the turns become half-halts that require planning.
- Each straight segment should have consistent rhythm. Each turn should maintain balance.
- Ride the square in both directions for equal practice.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Cutting corners at the cones instead of riding precise 90-degree turns.
- The straight segments curving instead of being truly straight.
- The horse slowing excessively in the turns and then rushing on the straights.
- Not looking ahead to the next cone, causing the horse to drift.
Variations & Progressions
- Add transitions on the straight segments: trot one side, canter the next.
- Decrease the square size to 10 meters for more demanding turns.
- Add a halt at each cone: halt for 3 seconds, then proceed to the next side.
Tip: Think of the square as a test of your rein aids and leg aids working together. Each turn needs both.
