Tarp Desensitization at the Walk
Focus: Confidence, Desensitization, Trust
Equipment: Small tarp or plastic sheet, Halter and leadrope
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start with the tarp folded up and on the ground. Lead your horse toward it at the walk.
- Allow the horse to see, sniff, and investigate the tarp. Don't rush this step.
- If the horse approaches calmly, unfold the tarp slightly and repeat the approach.
- Gradually unfold the tarp until it's fully open. Lead the horse around it, then over a corner.
- If the horse walks over any part of the tarp, praise lavishly. The crinkling sound is often the scariest part.
- Work toward the horse walking across the entire tarp calmly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forcing the horse onto the tarp before it's comfortable with the sight and sound.
- Punishing fear reactions — spooking is instinct, not disobedience.
- Moving too fast through the stages. If the horse is worried at step 2, don't jump to step 5.
- Not rewarding brave behavior (even small steps toward the tarp).
Variations & Progressions
- Drape the tarp over the horse's back while it stands still.
- Ride the horse over the tarp once it's comfortable being led.
- Use different textures: plastic bags, bubble wrap, foam mats.
Tip: Fear-based training creates a fearful horse. Patience-based training creates a confident horse. Let the horse set the pace.
