Terrain Variety Trot
Focus: Confidence, Balance, Exposure
Equipment: Access to varied terrain
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Take your horse on a trot through as many different surfaces as possible.
- Include: grass, gravel, sand, pavement, dirt, leaves, and any available surface changes.
- At each new surface, allow the horse to investigate by lowering its head.
- Trot calmly across each surface. If the horse hesitates, wait and encourage gently.
- The goal is a horse that trots confidently across any surface without spooking.
- Spend 20-30 minutes exploring different terrain types.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing from one surface to the next without letting the horse adjust.
- Forcing the horse onto surfaces it's genuinely frightened of (approach gradually).
- Not riding or leading on a loose rein, which prevents the horse from balancing naturally.
- Only training on one surface type (arena footing) and never exposing the horse to variety.
Variations & Progressions
- Trot across different surfaces once the walk is confident.
- Ride over terrain changes for a mounted version.
- Combine with hill work for a complete trail-prep session.
Tip: A trail horse needs to handle any footing. The more surfaces you practice at home, the fewer surprises on the trail.
