Trail Class: Back Through a Chute at the Trot
Focus: Precision, Patience, Body Control
Equipment: 6 ground poles
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a chute using ground poles: two parallel lines about 4 feet apart, 15 feet long.
- Trot your horse forward through the chute to show it the path.
- At the end of the chute, halt. Ask the horse to back through the chute.
- Guide with light rein pressure. The horse should back in a straight line without stepping on the poles.
- Keep the horse's body straight. If the haunches drift, correct with leg pressure.
- Back through the entire chute, then trot forward to reward.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse's haunches drifting and stepping outside the chute.
- Rushing the back-up instead of taking it one step at a time.
- Using too much rein and not enough leg to guide the horse straight.
- The horse refusing to back because it can't see where it's going.
Variations & Progressions
- Narrow the chute to 3 feet for increased precision.
- Add an L-turn in the chute for a more complex pattern.
- Practice backing through different chute configurations (straight, L, U-shape).
Tip: Backing through a chute requires trust. The horse can't see where it's going, so it relies on your aids. Be clear and consistent.
