Trail Class: Bridge Crossing at the Walk
Focus: Confidence, Body Awareness, Trust
Equipment: Bridge or platform (or plywood sheet)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Position the bridge or platform in the arena. Lead the horse to it first, allowing it to investigate.
- Once comfortable, ride the horse toward the bridge at the walk.
- Allow the horse to look at the bridge. When it takes a step toward it, praise.
- The horse should walk onto the bridge with its front feet, then bring the hind feet on.
- Stand on the bridge for 3-5 seconds. Then walk off calmly.
- Repeat until the horse walks over the bridge without hesitation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forcing the horse onto the bridge before it's comfortable.
- Punishing hesitation — the horse is being cautious, which is natural.
- Rushing over the bridge instead of standing on it.
- Not letting the horse look at the bridge before asking it to step on.
Variations & Progressions
- Walk over the bridge from both directions.
- Stand on the bridge for 30+ seconds for patience development.
- Jog over the bridge once the walk is confident.
Tip: The bridge is a trust exercise. The horse trusts you enough to step onto a surface that sounds and feels different. Reward that trust.
