Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up a mailbox or a post with a container (representing a trail class mailbox obstacle).
  2. Ride your horse to the mailbox. Stop parallel to it with your arm able to reach the mailbox.
  3. Open the mailbox with your hand. Reach in and remove an item (letter, flag, etc.).
  4. Hold the item, close the mailbox, and ride away calmly.
  5. The horse should stand perfectly still throughout the entire process.
  6. Practice until the horse is completely relaxed next to the mailbox, regardless of what you do with your hands.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The horse moving away from the mailbox when you reach for it.
  • Not positioning the horse close enough to reach the mailbox comfortably.
  • The horse fidgeting while you're occupied with the mailbox task.
  • Rushing the exercise instead of practicing smooth, deliberate movements.

Variations & Progressions

  • Practice with different objects on the post: cup, flag, bag.
  • Use both hands (switch sides) for ambidextrous practice.
  • Approach the mailbox from different directions for versatility.
Tip: Mailbox obstacles in trail class test patience and positioning. The horse must stand like a statue while your attention is elsewhere.
