Trail Class: Mailbox Obstacle at the Trot

Equipment: Mailbox or post with container, Halter and leadrope
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a mailbox or a post with a container (representing a trail class mailbox obstacle).
- Ride your horse to the mailbox. Stop parallel to it with your arm able to reach the mailbox.
- Open the mailbox with your hand. Reach in and remove an item (letter, flag, etc.).
- Hold the item, close the mailbox, and ride away calmly.
- The horse should stand perfectly still throughout the entire process.
- Practice until the horse is completely relaxed next to the mailbox, regardless of what you do with your hands.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse moving away from the mailbox when you reach for it.
- Not positioning the horse close enough to reach the mailbox comfortably.
- The horse fidgeting while you're occupied with the mailbox task.
- Rushing the exercise instead of practicing smooth, deliberate movements.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice with different objects on the post: cup, flag, bag.
- Use both hands (switch sides) for ambidextrous practice.
- Approach the mailbox from different directions for versatility.
Tip: Mailbox obstacles in trail class test patience and positioning. The horse must stand like a statue while your attention is elsewhere.
