Trail Class: Serpentine Through Poles at the Walk
Focus: Accuracy, Steering, Patience
Equipment: 6 ground poles
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up 6 poles in a row, spaced 7 feet apart, perpendicular to the direction of travel.
- Walk through the poles in a serpentine pattern, passing each pole on alternating sides.
- The horse must cross over each pole while weaving left-right-left through the pattern.
- Maintain a steady walk rhythm. Don't rush or slow down between poles.
- Each turn should be smooth and flowing, not jerky.
- Practice in both directions for equal development.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse stepping on poles instead of cleanly crossing over them.
- Losing the serpentine pattern and going straight through.
- The jog becoming irregular as the horse navigates the turns and poles.
- Not planning 2 poles ahead, causing late turns and missed poles.
Variations & Progressions
- Lope the serpentine for advanced riders.
- Decrease pole spacing to 6 feet for tighter turns.
- Walk the serpentine backward for a challenging variation.
Tip: The serpentine through poles combines two skills: steering accuracy and pole awareness. Master each separately before combining.
