Open the trailer fully. Set up with the ramp down or step-up door open. Make the interior as bright and inviting as possible.
Lead the horse toward the trailer. Allow it to investigate the ramp/step and the interior from outside.
If the horse approaches the ramp voluntarily, praise lavishly. Ask for one step up.
One step at a time. Reward each forward step. If the horse backs off, wait patiently and try again.
Once the horse has all four feet in the trailer, stand quietly for 30 seconds, then back out calmly.
Repeat the loading process 3-5 times until the horse walks in without hesitation.
The goal is a horse that self-loads: you point at the trailer and the horse walks in on its own.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forcing or whipping the horse onto the trailer, creating a permanent negative association.
Not allowing the horse to back out when it wants to, creating a claustrophobic response.
Closing the divider or door too soon before the horse is comfortable inside.
Only loading when you're going somewhere, so loading always predicts an unpleasant trip. Practice loading with no trip attached.
Variations & Progressions
Feed meals in the trailer (with the horse standing inside) for positive association.
Practice loading from both sides of a slant-load trailer.
Add unloading practice: teach the horse to back out calmly and slowly.
Tip: The best trailer-loaders are made, not born. Spend an afternoon loading and unloading with no pressure, and you'll have a horse that loads for life.
