Training Level Center Line and Halt
Focus: Accuracy, Straightness, Transitions
Equipment: Letter markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Turn down the center line at A at the working trot.
- Focus your eyes on C. Ride a perfectly straight line.
- At X, prepare to halt. Half-halt 3 strides before X.
- Halt at X. The halt should be square with the horse standing straight on the center line.
- Stand immobile for 3 seconds. Then proceed at the working trot toward C.
- At C, turn left or right onto the track. The turn should be smooth and balanced.
- Repeat the center line entry and halt 4-6 times, alternating the direction at C.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Drifting off the center line because the horse is drawn to the rail or other horses.
- The halt not being square — one leg trailing or the horse standing crooked.
- Moving at the halt (fidgeting, stepping, swishing tail).
- The transition from halt to trot being sluggish or explosive.
Variations & Progressions
- Add a rein-back after the halt for Training Level Test 3 preparation.
- Practice the entry at medium trot for Second Level test preparation.
- Film the entry from C to assess your straightness objectively.
Tip: First impressions matter in dressage tests. Your center line entry is the judge's first view of your horse. Make it count.
