Step-by-Step Instructions
- Using the arena letters as markers, plan a transition at every letter around the perimeter.
- A to K: sitting sitting trot. K to E: sitting trot. E to H: sitting sitting trot. H to C: sitting trot. And so on.
- The transitions must happen exactly at the letter — not before, not after.
- This requires precise planning. Begin preparing 3-4 strides before each letter.
- After mastering sitting sitting trot-sitting trot, upgrade to sitting trot-sitting trot transitions at the letters.
- Focus on the quality of each transition rather than the speed of moving between them.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Transitions happening early because the rider rushes the preparation.
- Transitions happening late because the horse doesn't respond promptly.
- Losing count of which transition comes next and getting confused.
- The horse anticipating and becoming tense as it approaches each letter.
Variations & Progressions
- Randomly vary which transitions happen at which letters for unpredictability.
- Add halt transitions at some letters for three-gait work.
- Perform the exercise with eyes closed for 2-3 strides to test your feel for the horse's position.
Tip: Plan your ride before you start. Know which transition happens at which letter. Riding with a mental map makes your training deliberate.
