Triple Combination: One-Two-One
Focus: Technique, Adjustability, Scope
Equipment: 6 jump poles, 6 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up 3 fences: first to second is one stride (18 feet), second to third is two strides (36 feet).
- Approach at the trot. The horse will jump, take one stride, jump, take two strides, and jump the final fence.
- The changing stride counts test the horse's adjustability within a combination.
- Keep your eyes up and your leg active. Let the distances teach the horse.
- Start with all fences as small cross-rails. Raise gradually as the horse gains confidence.
- Repeat 4-6 times. The horse should smooth out with each pass.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Approaching in canter (should be trot for consistent first distance).
- Interfering with the horse's natural stride between fences.
- Getting ahead of the motion on any of the three jumping efforts.
- Setting the fences too high before the horse masters the distances.
Variations & Progressions
- Reverse the distances: two strides first, then one stride.
- Raise the middle fence highest for a scope exercise.
- Change to bounced to one-stride (10 feet, then 18 feet) for a technical variation.
Tip: Triple combinations appear in every show jumping course. Master them in training and they'll be your strength in competition.
