Trotting Uphill at the Trot
Focus: Fitness, Power, Hind End Engagement
Equipment: Access to moderate hill
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Trot up the hill once to warm up. At the bottom, prepare for the trot.
- Pick up a working trot at the base of the hill and maintain it all the way to the top.
- Your posting should be deliberate. Let the horse push powerfully from its hindquarters.
- At the top, trot and let the horse recover. The heart rate should come down before the next repetition.
- Trot down the hill (always trot downhill unless on very gentle strots).
- Repeat the trot uphill 3-4 times. This builds explosive power in the hindquarters.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Trotting downhill, which stresses the front legs and tendons.
- Not allowing adequate recovery between repetitions.
- The horse breaking to canter on the uphill — maintain the trot.
- Starting uphill trot work before the horse has a base of flat fitness.
Variations & Progressions
- Progress to cantering uphill for maximum power development.
- Add ground pole work on flat ground between hill repetitions for variety.
- Vary the hills: gentle slopes for long intervals, steeper slopes for short bursts.
Tip: Trotting uphill is the equine equivalent of running stadium stairs. It builds power, wind, and muscle in the most important areas.
