At the end of the long side, ride deep into the corner to set up your turn.
Turn down the center line at A, maintaining the trot.
The center line at trot reveals every straightness issue — the horse will drift toward the rail or lean.
Keep equal pressure in both legs and both reins. Look at C and ride toward it.
At C, turn onto the track on the lead you're already troting.
Repeat on both leads 3-4 times. Note which lead makes the center line harder.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The horse falling to one side consistently, revealing its natural crookedness.
Over-correcting with the reins, creating a zigzag instead of a straight line.
Losing the canter quality while focusing on straightness.
Not riding deep enough into the corner, making the turn too sharp.

Add a halt at X from the canter for test preparation.
Ride a flying change on the center line at X.
Perform medium canter on the center line for Second Level preparation.
Tip: The center line at canter is the ultimate straightness test. If your horse drifts left on the right lead, you know the right shoulder is dominant.
