Two-Jump Bending Line
Focus: Accuracy, Adjustability, Track Planning
Equipment: 4 jump poles, 4 jump standards, 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up two small verticals about 60 feet apart on a bending line (not a straight line).
- The rider must arc between the two fences, choosing the path and number of strides.
- A direct line (less curve) might ride in 4 strides. A bending line (more curve) might ride in 5.
- Approach the first fence on a good canter. After landing, look at the second fence and plan your curve.
- Use your inside leg to maintain impulsion on the curve. Your outside rein guides the track.
- Practice both the 4-stride (direct) and 5-stride (bending) option to develop adjustability.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not planning the line before jumping the first fence.
- Drifting wide on the bending line, adding too many strides.
- Cutting the line too tight and getting too close to the second fence.
- Losing impulsion on the curve because the rider focuses only on direction.
Variations & Progressions
- Set up the line with different options: 4, 5, or 6 strides depending on the path.
- Ride the bending line in both directions for a figure-eight course.
- Add a third fence after the bending line for course simulation.
Tip: Bending lines test your track-planning skills. Walk the line on foot first to see the different paths available.
