Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Begin every ride with a 10-minute walk warm-up. This is non-negotiable for horse health.
  2. Walk on a loose rein for the first 3 minutes. Allow the horse to stretch its neck and look around.
  3. Pick up a working rein length and walk the arena perimeter. Include all four corners for gentle bending.
  4. Add large circles (20 meters) at each end of the arena for further bending.
  5. Include 3-4 changes of direction across the diagonal to stretch both sides.
  6. By the end of the 10 minutes, the horse should be moving freely with a swinging back.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the walk warm-up and going straight to trot or canter.
  • Making the warm-up too demanding (no lateral work or collection during warm-up).
  • Walking on a tight rein that prevents the horse from stretching.
  • Warming up for only 2-3 minutes — muscles need a full 10 minutes to be ready.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add halt transitions in the warm-up for obedience.
  • Include gentle leg yields for light lateral stretching.
  • Vary your warm-up route to keep the horse interested.
Tip: The walk warm-up is an investment. 10 minutes of walking prevents months of veterinary bills from cold-started injuries.
