Walking on Loose Rein: Trust Exercise
Focus: Trust, Relaxation, Independence
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- On a safe trail or in an open arena, let the reins drape completely loose.
- Your horse should walk forward at a steady pace without your rein guidance.
- If the horse stops or veers, pick up the reins briefly to redirect, then drop them again.
- The goal is a horse that walks confidently on a loose rein without speeding, stopping, or wandering.
- This tests the horse's willingness to move forward and the rider's ability to use seat and leg aids.
- Practice for 5-10 minutes at a time, gradually increasing the loose-rein duration.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse stopping dead and not walking forward without rein contact.
- The horse veering toward the barn or gate because there's no rein correction.
- The rider being too nervous to truly let go of the reins.
- The horse taking advantage of the loose rein to eat grass.
Variations & Progressions
- Progress to trotting on a loose rein for a more advanced test.
- Loose rein walking on the trail for a real-world application.
- Add gentle changes of direction using only seat and leg aids.
Tip: A horse that walks calmly on a completely loose rein is a horse that trusts its rider and isn't relying on the reins for security.
