Western Jog to Walk Transition Drill
Focus: Transitions, Patience, Rhythm
Equipment: Letter markers or cones
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the jog, ride the arena perimeter. Plan a walk transition at every other cone or letter.
- The transition should come from your seat: sit deep, exhale, and close your fingers.
- Walk for 6-8 strides, then pick up the jog again.
- Each jog departure should be smooth and slow — no rushing into the jog.
- Practice until both the downward and upward transitions are seamless.
- The goal is transitions so smooth that a spectator can barely see the change.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The walk transition being too rough (pulling on the reins).
- The jog departure being too fast (the horse popping into a fast jog).
- Not walking long enough between jog segments.
- The horse anticipating transitions and changing gait before asked.
Variations & Progressions
- Add lope transitions for three-gait practice.
- Vary the number of walk strides: 4 strides, 8 strides, 12 strides randomly.
- Practice with a friend calling the transitions for unpredictability.
Tip: Smooth transitions are the hallmark of a well-trained western horse. The smoother the transition, the higher the score.
