Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. At the walk, ride the arena perimeter. Plan a walk transition at every other cone or letter.
  2. The transition should come from your seat: sit deep, exhale, and close your fingers.
  3. Walk for 6-8 strides, then pick up the walk again.
  4. Each walk departure should be smooth and slow — no rushing into the walk.
  5. Practice until both the downward and upward transitions are seamless.
  6. The goal is transitions so smooth that a spectator can barely see the change.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The walk transition being too rough (pulling on the reins).
  • The jog departure being too fast (the horse popping into a fast jog).
  • Not walking long enough between jog segments.
  • The horse anticipating transitions and changing gait before asked.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add lope transitions for three-gait practice.
  • Vary the number of walk strides: 4 strides, 8 strides, 12 strides randomly.
  • Practice with a friend calling the transitions for unpredictability.
Tip: Smooth transitions are the hallmark of a well-trained western horse. The smoother the transition, the higher the score.
