Ride the rail as if in a pleasure class: walk, jog, lope in both directions with transitions.
Walk the rail for one full trip. Focus on a flat-footed walk with a relaxed head and neck.
Pick up the jog. Ride the rail with a consistent, comfortable jog for one full trip.
Pick up the lope. The lope should be slow, three-beat, and relaxed. Ride one full trip.
Transition down: lope to jog to walk. Each transition should be smooth and gradual.
Reverse and repeat all gaits in the other direction.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The horse's head being too high — the western pleasure horse carries a level topline.
The jog or lope being too fast for pleasure standards.
Rough transitions that jolt the horse or rider.
The horse leaning on the rail instead of carrying itself independently.
Variations & Progressions
Have someone call gait changes as if they're a judge for show simulation.
Add an extended jog and extended lope for additional gait transitions.
Practice transitions at specific points on the rail for precision.
Tip: Western pleasure is about making the horse look easy and pleasant to ride. Every gait should invite the judge to say 'I'd love to ride that horse.'
