Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Ride the rail as if in a pleasure class: canter, canter, canter in both directions with transitions.
  2. Canter the rail for one full trip. Focus on a flat-footed canter with a relaxed head and neck.
  3. Pick up the canter. Ride the rail with a consistent, comfortable canter for one full trip.
  4. Pick up the canter. The canter should be slow, three-beat, and relaxed. Ride one full trip.
  5. Transition down: canter to canter to canter. Each transition should be smooth and gradual.
  6. Reverse and repeat all gaits in the other direction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The horse's head being too high — the western pleasure horse carries a level topline.
  • The jog or lope being too fast for pleasure standards.
  • Rough transitions that jolt the horse or rider.
  • The horse leaning on the rail instead of carrying itself independently.

Variations & Progressions

  • Have someone call gait changes as if they're a judge for show simulation.
  • Add an extended jog and extended lope for additional gait transitions.
  • Practice transitions at specific points on the rail for precision.
Tip: Western pleasure is about making the horse look easy and pleasant to ride. Every gait should invite the judge to say 'I'd love to ride that horse.'
