Working to Collected Trot Transitions
Focus: Collection, Engagement, Balance
Equipment: Letter markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the working trot, ride a 20-meter circle. Establish a steady, rhythmic tempo.
- At a designated point, half-halt firmly and ask the horse to shorten the stride without losing energy.
- The collected trot should feel like the horse is sitting more on the haunches, with shorter but higher steps.
- Maintain collected trot for half the circle, then allow the horse back to working trot.
- The transition between working and collected should be gradual — think of a dimmer switch, not an on-off switch.
- Repeat the transitions 4-5 times, then change direction.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse simply slowing down instead of truly collecting (shorter, higher steps).
- Losing impulsion in the collection — the horse becomes lazy instead of more engaged.
- Over-collecting so the horse becomes tight and tense in the back.
- Not allowing enough return to working trot between collection phases.
Variations & Progressions
- Progress to extended trot from collected trot for the full range of adjustability.
- Perform the transitions on the long side at specific letters.
- Add collected trot to walk transitions for further collection work.
Tip: Collection is not slow. It is the same energy in a shorter stride. Think of compressing a spring — same force, smaller space.
