Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Simulate competition conditions: warm up as you would at a show.
  2. Walk and jog for 10 minutes. Lope circles for 5 minutes.
  3. Run the barrel pattern at 80% speed. Cool down for 3 minutes.
  4. Run the pattern again at 90% speed. Cool down for 5 minutes.
  5. If the horse is fresh and willing, run one more at competition speed.
  6. This simulates the demands of a multi-run competition day.
  7. Cool down for a minimum of 15 minutes after the session.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running too many full-speed runs (3 maximum in a training session).
  • Not cooling down between runs.
  • Pushing a horse that shows signs of fatigue or soreness.
  • Doing this drill more than once a week.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add a trail ride cool-down after the simulation for variety.
  • Vary the speed of each run: first run at 70%, second at 85%, third at 95%.
  • Practice the simulation with different pattern orders for mental flexibility.
Tip: Competition simulation is the final step in barrel horse training. The horse should handle multiple runs without losing form or attitude.
