Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Place cones where the barrels would be, but don't use actual barrels.
  2. Ride the barrel pattern around the cones at the sitting trot.
  3. Without the visual focus of barrels, you must rely on your path and muscle memory.
  4. This exercise prevents the horse from becoming barrel-sour (only running when it sees barrels).
  5. Ride the pattern casually, focusing on position and turns without intensity.
  6. Practice 3-4 times, then sitting sitting trot and cool down.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating the cone pattern with the same intensity as barrel work (defeats the purpose).
  • The horse not maintaining the pattern because it doesn't see barrels to orient to.
  • Skipping this exercise because it seems too simple.
  • Running the pattern at speed even without barrels.

Variations & Progressions

  • Ride the pattern with the cones in slightly different positions to keep the horse thinking.
  • Walk the pattern backward for a different mental challenge.
  • Use the cone pattern for flat work: circles, transitions, and lead changes around the cones.
Tip: Practice without barrels keeps the horse's mind fresh and prevents anticipation. A thinking horse is better than a robotic one.
