Barrel Turn Dry Work: No Barrel at the Collected Trot
Focus: Turns, Bend, Muscle Memory
Equipment: 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Place a single cone where a barrel would be. This is your turn point.
- Collected Trot toward the cone on your approach line. 4-5 strides before the cone, rate to a collected trot.
- Collected Trot a tight circle around the cone (representing the barrel turn).
- After the circle, collected trot out on your departure line.
- Practice 6-8 turns around the cone at this slow speed.
- The slow-speed practice builds muscle memory for the turn shape without stressing the horse.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Turning too tight and losing impulsion.
- Not rating enough before the turn, arriving at the cone too fast.
- Only practicing turns in one direction.
- Skipping the slow work and always training at speed.
Variations & Progressions
- Gradually increase the speed of the approach and turn.
- Practice with a barrel instead of a cone for more realistic spacing.
- Chain 3 turns together (representing all 3 barrels) for pattern flow.
Tip: Slow practice builds perfect form. Fast practice reveals weaknesses. Do both, but start with slow.
