Set up a standard barrel pattern: first barrel on the right at 60 feet, second barrel on the left at 60 feet across, third barrel at the far end 105 feet away.
Collected Collected Trot the pattern on horseback. Approach the first barrel on the left side, riding a circle around it to the right.
After the first barrel, ride to the second barrel. Approach on the right side, circling to the left.
After the second barrel, ride to the third barrel at the far end. Circle to the left (or right, depending on your pattern).
After the third barrel, ride home in a straight line.
Collected Collected Trot the entire pattern 3-4 times. The pattern should become second nature before adding speed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Cutting the turns too tight around the barrels, knocking them over.
Not approaching the barrel from the correct side for the turn direction.
Forgetting the pattern sequence (typically 1-2-3 or right-left-left).
Skipping the walk phase and going straight to loping the pattern.
Variations & Progressions
Jog the pattern once the walk is smooth for a speed increase.
Practice the pattern without barrels (just the track) for muscle memory.
Walk the pattern in reverse order for variety and to prevent anticipation.
Tip: Walk the pattern until your horse can do it in its sleep. Speed without accuracy is just running around barrels.
